Abuses, war and devastation are seen in the whole of Europe. He is a man with a penetrating gaze. He reaffirms his faith in God and his Church. He is alert to the presence of evil in various forms: epidemics, divisions, hunger, confusion, anarchy and social dissolution – a situation that reaches all corners of the globe.
He looks back to Europe to recall the humiliation of the Pope at the hands of those in power.
